Greetings Friends and Neighbors!
This winter has been an exciting time for the Village! Each day has been full of exciting new progress towards getting the village fully operational. Check out our NEWS page to see photos from our Christmas dinner and toy give away and for photos of the huge remodeling project currently underway!
Our hard work, and that of innumerable volunteers, has not only been felt throughout the center but throughout the entire 9th ward. Lately the entire crew here at the village has felt revitalized and a new sense of dedication that we feel is contagious. These are exciting times at the Village!
Once the construction project is all said and done will be leaps and bounds closer to reaching our goal of having the center complete and up to code by this summer. We hope that this summer we can have all our programs up and running, including a summer camp, job training, and activities for the elderly! However, in order to do this we still have a ways to go. Most importantly, we need to get our building up to code and make it kid-friendly, and, in doing so, get the proper insurance to get our programs off the ground. Although we’ll have just gotten new lighting fixtures installed nearly all of the electrical wiring in the building is pre-Katrina and needs to be updated and in many places replaced–one of the biggest challenges we need to overcome in order for the building to be up to code. Furthermore, there are the many small things such as better seating, materials for program activities, and general program funding, that are needed to make the programs a success.
As you can tell, there’s been a lot going on and we’ve set some lofty goals for the next few months if we’re to have everything ready to start the summer off with a bang! However, we also know that without these high aspirations and the true belief and support in the center from so many, none of this would have been possible in the first place and would have only been, and always remained, a dream.In order to accomplish everything we need to by summer we’ve kicked off a Building Funds Drive where we’ve given ourselves the fundraising goal of raising $200,000 by March 15th–the amount of money we think we need to finishing the building and fund and staff our summer programing. Although this is a tremendous amount of money we know that, with the help from our friends and allies, we can reach our goal! We hope that you’ll consider donating today knowing that even the smallest of donations–combined with many others–go a long way.
